Local search engine optimnization is now required for your business.

Google has changed the way they are displaying search results. They
are using Pin Point accuracy displaying results that make local search
optimization
extremely important.

This change will be a huge benefit to brick and morter businesses. It
used to be that a searcher had to enter a search sting like "carpet
cleaner Phoenix" or "Iron Gates Phoenix" in order to find localized
results. No more, as Google has changed the game.

Now if you just enter a term like carpet cleaner or iron gate, the 4th
position is now local results based on your location. This does 2
things, first it makes the top 3 positions much more valuable as the
map locations are displayed, forcing a longer page with results five
through 10 ending up below the fold. Visually the map results seem to
be a stopping point and give me the illusion that I don't need to go
further down the page.

Google-local-result

This is  good news for anyone running a brick-and-mortar business or a geographically specific Web business but it does open the doors to additional map spam.

Clorox offers $5K to wipe out SF 'toilet torcher'

Sat Mar 21, 2:39 am ET

SAN FRANCISCO – The Clorox Company is offering a $5,000 reward and a year's supply of toilet cleaning products for tips leading to the arrest of San Francisco's notorious portable potty pyromaniac.

The Oakland-based chemical company deployed a "potty patrol" team in the city Friday to make residents aware of its offer marrying marketing and community service.

Since November, more than two dozen construction site toilets have been set on fire in the city, causing an estimated $50,000 in property damage and leaving a trail of foul-smelling evidence.

eMarketer Predicts Shrinkage For Local Ad Market

It’s that time again folks. It’s time to write a headline that if someone doesn’t look beyond the statement it may seem a little odd or maybe even shocking.

Of course since we are concerned with Internet marketing here this is actually a story with a pleasant ending. The findings are reported over at eMarketer from a study done by the Kelsey Group and BIA Advisory Services.

By the year 2013 the local ad market will shrink. The compound annual growth rate from 2008 – 1013 is projected to be -1.4% with the biggest year to year decline occurring this year.

Here’s the picture. I am not a very big fan of these crystal ball prognostications. We are barely able to determine what will happen 6 months from now let alone 4 plus years from now. The pattern that is predicted however makes sense. The decline will occur in traditional media.

There is no surprise here. We can see how poorly things are going for local advertising by simply looking at the state of the newspaper industry. That combined with doubt as to the future of hard Yellow Page advertising explains the drop in that area.

It’s predicting the numbers that always makes everyone queasy. Now, the upside of this is the fact that online local advertising is anticipated to grow significantly. It is predicted by this study to grow at a compound annual growth rate of over 18%. Right now online advertising is about 12% of the overall local spending and that could go as high as 22% by 2013. Impressive numbers for sure if you are in the online space and if you chose to buy the research.

I think it’s less about being right about the magnitude of the change but rather about the change itself. The real question and thinking should be around why this is happening. So why is it? It’s becoming a bit of a broken record but online is trackable and measurable in ways that traditional marketing isn’t. Based on that it just makes better sense for businesses to use marketing dollars where they can be most effective with a greater return on investment. So as an Internet marketer make sure you look past the headlines.

This is the good side of the marketing fence to be on for the foreseeable future because the grass is getting greener right where we are.

Mobile Phones and search engines

70% of mobile phone owners used search engines to access information last year according to a new study released by ABI Research.

Some content was more popular than others. Games, news music downloads are some of the big winners while ringtones were down from 2007.

The more bandwidth we as individuals have access to the more we will use mobile devices to access the web. If you are a business owner or responsible for a web site make sure you get ready for the next wave of traffic. From mobile phones and mobile devices by being indexed in all of the major local search sites like Google Maps, Yahoo local. This will also get you found in the directory assistance services like Goog411 that many of us are turning to.
